Reflection #2: Fair Use
Document the fair use reasoning process -- how do the copyrighted works that you're using in Project 1 exhibit fair use of the copyrighted material? Reflection length: 300 words. Due Monday, July 16 on the class wiki page.
The Fair Use process consists of four separate factors on how copyrighted material is allowed to be re-used. As long as one of these is sufficiently supported by the work containing the copyrighted media it is protected under Fair Use. The nature, purpose, amount of context, and effect on potential markets are all taken into consideration with each slide we have created. The whole slideshow is made under the fact that it is used for education to show how instagram can make anyone look like a real photographer and that Fair Use comes into play quite a bit. Each instagram photo is public and can be viewed by anyone with the app. This can make Fair use come into play as copyrighted images may be captured on purpose or by accident. Someone could sell the photos they take but Instagram does not sell the photos themselves. Instagram wouldn’t be responsible at all if you took copyrighted images with instagram, then printed them out and sell them for profit. The effect on potential markets would normally not come into play because there wouldn’t be anyone looking at a photo on instagram as there only source of the copyrighted thing. The purpose of the photos is generally for social media and if it is for advertising it would probably be for your own product. You could also take pictures of a bad sandwich at McDonald’s and post it with critique in mind. I can’t imagine any company having a problem with copyrighted images on instagram but that’s not to say it’s impossible.

What is a "remix"? Provide your own definition for the term remix. Then describe a time in your life that you have experienced or created a remix according to your definition. Reflect on both the source material for the remix and the new work. Post to the class wiki page before the start of class on Tuesday, June 10th. A remix is taking an original mix of a music track and redoing it, keeping the same integrity to the original and it is normally recognizable as the same song. A cover is similar to that but it is a re-creation of the original mix so it cannot be considered a remix. I downloaded fruityloops which is a music program and made some weird music with it. I found a sound on it that reminded me of "The Final Countdown" by Europe. So I made a weird cover of it with a robot type voice and used guitar tabs to get the notes right. I can't think of a time I've made an actual remix of anything by taking the original audio of something and redoing it except for maybe editing my own personal work, which is more just editing and not remixing to me. I don't listen to much music that has remixes and am not familiar with much of it. Searching my winamp for remix I did find a few and will post the youtube vid to one of them here.
